US attacks Iran again – explosions at Hormuz
On Sunday, US forces attacked two Iranian launch pads on the island of Larak in the Strait of Hormuz, the news site Axios and the news agency AP report.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard promises revenge.
The attack is the US's first against Iranian targets in several weeks. The last known attack took place at the end of July.
The Iranian forces are said to have been in the process of launching new mines in the important waterway when the US attacked, Axios and AP write, citing American sources.
Residents near the Iranian island of Larak have heard explosions, the Iranian state news agency Fars reported.
Reports of deaths
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said in a statement that the attack would be responded to. According to the Guards, several people – both soldiers and civilians – were killed and injured.
“This action was a strategic and fatal mistake by the Trump regime,” Guards spokesman Sardar Mohebbi said in a statement carried by Iranian state media, adding that it would have costs in both the “military and economic fields.”
The US attack comes just days after President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stressed that economic pressure – “an economic D-Day” – would bring down the Iranian regime. A sanctions plan has been presented to isolate Iran economically, and the country’s allies have also been threatened with measures.
