In Gironde in southwestern France, where the forest fire has now been fought, hundreds of grenades and ammunition from the Second World War have been found in the ashes.

In Le Porge north of Bordeaux, almost 200 houses were destroyed in the huge fire. During the extinguishing work, explosions were heard that were assumed to be gas containers exploding in the heat. Grenades and other ammunition from the Second World War have now been found in the charred ground. Deminers are working in the area and since Friday more than 75 unexploded grenades have been removed. The head of the demining team in Bordeaux tells Le Figaro that “there are many more.”

"The focus is first on collecting shells found on the surface. We will deal with the buried shells later," he told the newspaper.
