Sources: Pete Hegseth scolded by Trump over weapons shortage
Donald Trump and his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly clashed during a meeting at the Camp David retreat last week, sources told the Washington Post.
According to the reports, Trump felt misled about the serious shortage of missiles in the US military's stockpile. One of the sources states that the weapons shortage was one of the reasons why Trump backed down from new large-scale attacks on Iran in recent days.
When confronted, Hegseth is said to have blamed Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg, both for the shortage and for Trump apparently receiving incorrect information.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt describes the reports as "100 percent fake news".
Expert: Trump has a menu of bad options
The United States faces a difficult choice and President Donald Trump has no easy way to end the Iran war, which has dragged on for much longer than he had intended, experts told Reuters.
Aaron David Miller, who has negotiated on Middle East issues for both Republican and Democratic administrations, sees three possible paths.
Trump could accept a deal between Iran and Oman, giving Tehran increased control of the Strait of Hormuz. That would be Iran's biggest victory of the entire war. He could also order new bombings, with unclear effects and the risk of a weak Republican showing in the midterm elections. Or he could stick to the current stalemate, with no clear path to an end to the unpopular war.
