Former lawyer sworn in as president of Colombia
Right-wing politician Abelardo de la Espriella has been sworn in as Colombia's new president at a ceremony in Cali, AFP reports.
The former lawyer won the decisive election round by less than one percentage point in June. His inauguration puts an end to Colombia's first and only left-wing government under Gustavo Petro.
The 48-year-old has promised, among other things, to crack down on drug traffickers and other armed groups in the country, writes AP.
Among the guests at the ceremony were Argentine President Javier Milei and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
New government to cooperate with the US against the cartels
Colombia's new right-wing president Abelardo de la Espriella has promised to crush the country's powerful drug cartels with the help of the US.
A senior Pentagon source told the New York Times that military cooperation between the countries will now be raised “to new levels.”
de la Espriella has designated the city of Medellín – once the heart of cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar’s empire – as the hub of Trump’s new regional anti-drug alliance, the Shield of the Americas.
The Trump administration identifies Latin American cartels as the main culprits behind overdoses and violent crime in the United States and has made them priority targets.
A total of 19 countries are part of the alliance against the cartels, which the United States compares to the fight against al-Qaeda and ISIS.
