Spain introduces border controls against Italy

Italy has introduced border controls against Spain after the migrant crisis in the exclave of Ceuta last week. Spain is responding in kind and introducing temporary border controls against Italy.

Italy has suspended Schengen cooperation with Spain for a month and introduced stricter border controls against the country after around 50,000 migrants made their way from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

The Spanish government on Friday called the measure “unfair, contrary to the interests of the EU and discriminatory against the Spanish population”, and demanded that it be withdrawn by August 9.

“Italy does not accept ultimatums or foreign impositions regarding national security and border control”, was the response from the office of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Later, Spain's Interior Ministry announced that it would introduce border controls on travelers from Italy, starting Saturday midnight.
