Volodymyr Zelensky is in Serbia to strengthen ties with one of the few countries in Europe that has maintained a close relationship with Moscow.

"We will discuss expanded economic ties between our countries, relations with the EU, other areas that our countries can benefit from, and security issues," the Ukrainian president writes on X.

He was welcomed in Belgrade by several Serbian ministers before having dinner with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

The two were due to hold official talks on Saturday, but Zelensky published a picture of the two on social media in the evening, writing that they "have started bilateral talks".

The visit is Zelensky's first to Serbia since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
