Sweden is buying the Himars rocket artillery system from the USA.

The government has decided this today, according to information to Aftonbladet.

This will be the first time ever that the Armed Forces will receive rocket artillery.

Sweden has also evaluated the K239 Chunmoo system from South Korea, before choosing the American Himars (High mobility artillery rocket system).

Rocket artillery fires different types of rockets, which reach further than the shells from traditional gun artillery. The range varies between 80 and 320 kilometers, depending on the ammunition.

The Himars system was donated to Ukraine in 2022, and initially had extremely high effectiveness in the war against Russia.

American Himars systems have visited Sweden several times, and among other things fired two sharp rockets from Gotland out over the Baltic Sea last spring.

Introducing rocket artillery was a “high priority” for Michael Claesson when he took office as ÖB in 2024.

Aftonbladet has contacted Defense Minister Pål Jonson’s (M) press secretary, who would neither confirm nor deny.
