Eased rules for misinformation and hate speech. And Donald Trump gets his account back.

This is how the new Twitter can be when Elon Musk takes over the platform.

It was in April this year that Tesla founder, also the world's richest man, Elon Musk announced that he wanted to buy Twitter. During Friday morning, the purchase was completed - for a sum of 44 billion dollars, according to several American media.

"The bird is freed," Musk tweeted on Friday morning. Musk, who calls himself a "free speech absolutist", has previously directed harsh criticism at the platform. According to him, it has been characterized by a clear left-wing bias and limited freedom of expression.

And Musk is off to a flying start. According to several media outlets, he has already fired CEO Parag Agrawal and CFO Ned Segal, who were escorted out of the building. Two general counsels have also been let go, according to the Washington Post accused by Musk of trying to mislead him.

And more may be allowed to go. To improve Twitter's results, up to 75 percent of the 7,500 employees may go, according to documents seen by the Washington Post.

Layoffs were planned before Musk took over. At his first meeting with the employees, however, he is said to have said that he does not plan to fire that many.

Musk has previously said he wants to ease Twitter's guidelines on misinformation and hate speech.

Suspension of Trump 'moral wrong'

The takeover also opens the way for suspended users to come back. Donald Trump was permanently suspended in January 2021, after the storming of the Capitol

- something Musk has been critical of. - I think it was a mistake. It alienated the country and didn't result in Donald Trump not getting a vote. I think it was a morally bad decision and extremely stupid, he said in an interview in May.

Musk has also been critical of Twitter's algorithms that control which posts users see, something he says could be solved with open source code.

According to the Tesla founder, the purchase is not a financial investment, but an investment in the future of civilization.

- I think it is very important to have an inclusive arena for free speech. Twitter has de facto become a square so it is very important that people both in reality and in their perception can speak freely within the framework of the law, Musk has said in an interview.

Elon Musk.
