Presidential candidate Nikki Haley has found herself in the dark.

At a press conference in Berlin, New Hampshire, she did not mention slavery as one of the reasons for the Civil War, reports ABC.

“What do you want me to say about slavery?,” says Nikki Haley.

Nikki Haley is one of the seven Republican candidates hoping to take the role of President of the United States after next year's election.

But after a campaign stop in Berlin, New Hampshire, she's got it hot about the ears. During an event, she was asked by someone in the audience what she thinks the reason for the American Civil War was.

The former governor of South Carolina — which was the first state to leave the Union in 1860 — first turned the question back to the person who asked it.

"What do you think was the reason?" she says, to which the person replies "I'm not running for president".

Nikki Haley then goes on to answer the question and says:

“I think it's always about the role of the government and what the people's rights are. And we will always stand by the fact that I believe the government was intended to secure the rights and liberties of the people,” Haley said.

And continued:

“It was never meant to be all things to all people. The government doesn't need to tell you how to live your life. They don't need to tell you what you can and can't do. They don't have to be a part of your life. They have to make sure you have freedom”

The person who asked the question then told Haley that it was remarkable that she did not mention slavery.

“What do you want me to say about slavery?” Haley asks back before passing the word on to the next one.

The fact that the American Civil War started consists of many factors, including political and economic factors, but at the center was the issue of slavery, writes ABC.

And the response that Nikki Haley gave was filmed and has since been shared on social media.

US President Joe Biden responds to one of the films by writing: "It was about slavery".
