The first residents have begun moving into Egypt's new capital, which still has no name. The city is being built in the desert 45 kilometers outside of Cairo, the country's capital for over 1,000 years.
So far, 100,000 homes have been completed and 1,200 families have moved in, the company responsible for the mega-project told Reuters. Already last summer, politicians and government officials started setting up their seats in the city. During the beginning of 2024, several large banks and companies will also open their headquarters.
The massive infrastructure project has been launched by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to boost the economy. The goal is for the new city to be more modern and less chaotic than Cairo and to absorb many people. This is because the country's population is growing by approximately 1.6 percent a year.

Africa's tallest building is already completed in the new city
Several gigantic buildings are already ready in Egypt's new capital, which is being built a few miles outside the current capital, Cairo. That is written by Reuters.
A 70-story skyscraper rises in the city, making the building the tallest in all of Africa. In addition, the city houses a large opera house, a spacious presidential palace, a giant mosque and the largest cathedral in the Middle East.
Construction of the new city has been underway since 2015 and will continue for several more years, according to The Atlantic. The idea is that a total of six million people will fit in the city when it is finished, which should be able to relieve Cairo.
