US President: There will be no agreement on new Ukraine aid
There will be no compromise with the Democrats on strengthened border protection in order to let through the continued support for Ukraine that the Republicans have blocked for several months.
That was the signal from Republican Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday, hours before a meeting with President Joe Biden, writes the New York Times.

Republicans, pushed by the hard-line phalanx, have made continued support for Ukraine conditional on strong action on the Mexican border.
According to Johnson, even a deal that meets all of the party's demands on border protection probably won't be enough to green light new support. Biden's administration must also explain the "end goal" of the support and ensure that the Ukraine war "does not become a new Afghanistan," says the speaker.

von der Leyen confident of new EU support for Ukraine
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen is convinced that the union's 27 member states will reach a solution to continue supporting Ukraine, reports AFP.
Currently, Hungary is the only EU country blocking a 50 billion euro aid package for the country. But von der Leyen believes that it is possible to get Viktor Orbán to drop his veto, and that the decision will be made at a summit on February 1.
