Expert: There is a risk of new cracks and more devastation
The new volcanic eruption in Iceland may subside as quickly as the one in December, but there are worrying signs. That's what seismologist Björn Lund tells TT after lava reached the houses in Grindavik.
Lund says that magma chambers have been filled, which can cause more devastation.
- There is a not negligible risk that two more cracks open further south in the center of the city.
Electricity and water lines have been damaged, but there are no reports of injuries yet.

The lava has reached the houses: "It is very ominous"
After a new fissure opened in the ground at Iceland's Grindavik during the afternoon, lava has begun to flow over the lowest dikes into the city. At 3:15 p.m., the first house was reached, according to VG.
- It is very ominous as it looks at the moment, says mayor Fannar Jónasson to the public service company Rúv.
According to TT, several houses have caught fire. Seismologist Björn Lund tells the news agency that there are "intense lava fountains" at two houses.
Volcanologist Thorvaldur Thordarson was previously hopeful, but now the situation has changed.
- This is perhaps one of the worst places where we could have an outbreak, he tells the channel.

Unexpected turn in Iceland: "Nothing we can do"
A second fissure has opened in the ground in Iceland in connection with the volcanic eruption that has been ongoing since this morning, Icelandic Ruv reports. The fissure is significantly closer to the town of Grindavik than the gap that opened in the morning.
The volcanologist Thorvaldur Thordarson says that the new fissure completely changes the conditions.
- I hope it will die out, but that is only hope.
Grindavik's mayor Fannar Jónasson says that the situation has changed compared to the situation this morning.
- There is nothing we can do about this.
