Bardella tries to kill climate pact – gets a nod
The leader of the French far-right National Rally party, Marine Le Pen's protege Jordan Bardella, wants to put the nail in the coffin of the EU's climate program, the Green Deal. In a letter to the conservative party groups in the European Parliament, which Politico has seen, Bardella asks for support.
If the four party groups on the far right temporarily agree, a majority will be created that can lower the climate package, Bardella writes.
"A temporary suspension of the Green Deal would allow us to reassess its goals without destroying our continent's prospects for prosperity," he writes.
But the largest conservative party group, the EPP, rejects the proposal, even though the EPP itself is critical of some of its content.

Several earthquakes in Santorini – schools closed
Several minor earthquakes have been registered in the sea around the Greek tourist island of Santorini in recent days. It has now been decided that schools will be closed tomorrow, residents are advised to avoid large crowds in closed spaces and to stay away from some built-up areas, writes Reuters.
The quake, which had a magnitude of between 4.1 and 4.5, is not considered to be due to volcanic activity but is the result of movements in tectonic plates in the area.
The island is one of the country's most popular tourist islands.
Residents near growing sinkhole in Japan must evacuate
People living in the "immediate vicinity" of the growing sinkhole in the city of Yashio, north of Tokyo, were urged to leave their homes on Sunday, reports AFP. Previously, all residents within a 50-meter radius of the hole had to evacuate.
It was on Tuesday that the sinkhole opened and a three-ton truck disappeared into the asphalt along with the 74-year-old driver. A huge rescue effort has been underway since then. Meanwhile, the hole has grown and is now estimated to be 40 meters wide and about 15 meters deep.
On Saturday, construction of a ramp was completed that will make it possible to send rescue workers down to search for the 74-year-old, but the operation had to be suspended on Sunday due to rain and large amounts of leaking sewage.
