Middle East Crisis Gaza War

Analysis: A Crazy Plan – Will Lead to Chaos

Donald Trump’s plan for an American takeover of Gaza is crazy – it would amount to war crimes and lead to total chaos in the region, writes Steve A Cook in Foreign Policy.

Trump mistakenly imagines that all Palestinians want to move from the bombed-out Gaza to some beautiful place that only exists in his imagination, Cook continues. In addition, the plan goes completely against the US goal of normalization between Israel and Arab countries in the region, he adds.

“With a single press conference, Trump undermined US credibility and caused more uncertainty and instability in a region that already had too much of both.”

There are many problems with Trump’s plan, and the biggest one he didn’t even address in his press conference: Hamas, writes Steven Erlanger for the New York Times.

Trump has no answer for how he will get the terror group out of Gaza, which for many Arab states is a condition for helping with reconstruction. Maintaining peace in the enclave would likely require tens of thousands of US troops on site for perhaps more than a decade, Erlanger continues.

“Hamas has made it clear that they are not going anywhere, and they will probably fight US troops as they did against Israelis.”

UN Appeals: Help Us Feed Gaza’s Residents

The UN World Food Programme WFP is appealing to the world to help feed Gazans and help rebuild the war-torn enclave, AFP reports.

“We call on the international community and all donors to continue supporting WFP’s vital work at this crucial moment,” says WFP chief Carl Skau.

Since the ceasefire began on January 19, WFP has brought more than 15,000 tons of food into Gaza, but it adds that the needs are enormous and much more is needed.

Gazans could become more self-sufficient if they are helped to restore local trade, agriculture and fishing, according to the WFP.

Secretary of State Defends Gaza Plan: “Nobody Else Seems to Want to Do Anything”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is defending Donald Trump’s much-criticized plan for a US takeover of Gaza, AFP reports.

Rubio echoes Trump’s words that Gaza is currently uninhabitable, and says the president’s intention is to encourage other countries “with sufficient economic and technological capabilities” to help rebuild Gaza.

– President Trump has offered to be part of the solution. If other countries are willing to step in and do it themselves, that’s great, but nobody seems to be in a hurry to do it, he says.
