Nearly 3,000 killed after fighting in Goma
Nearly 3,000 people have died in the eastern city of Goma in Congo-Kinshasa, CNN reports. It has been since fighting broke out between the Rwanda-backed rebel group M23 and the Congolese army in late January.
The rebels claimed control of the city last week after several days of intense fighting.
– We estimate that this number will rise, says Vivian van de Perre, head of the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo-Kinshasa to the press in a video call.
On Tuesday, M23 declared a ceasefire in the country, but the UN called it a “false communication” after violence broke out again in South Kivu province when M23 launched a new offensive.
Over 150 women raped in prison break
In connection with a massive prison break in Goma in eastern Congo-Kinshasa, 150 women were raped, CNN reports, citing a report from the UN. Most of the women later died in a fire in the prison that the prisoners started.
It was on Monday last week when the Rwandan-backed rebel force M23 took over the city that hundreds of inmates broke out of the Munzenze prison.
In connection with this, around 165 assaults on women by male prisoners were reported.
