Study: Alpine Glaciers Almost Gone by 2100
Only 3 percent of the Alpine glaciers will remain by the end of this century, assuming global warming rises to 2.7 degrees above pre-industrial levels. This is reported by Politico, referring to a new study published in Nature Climate Change.
The researchers have calculated how the mountain range will be affected by several different scenarios, and 2.7 degrees is based on current climate policies.
By 2033, 100 glaciers are expected to have melted away, writes The Guardian.
– The Alps as we know them will look completely different by the end of this century, says study author Lander Van Tricht.
Source: EU zero-emissions requirement postponed for several years
The European Commission is expected to backtrack on its previous decision to introduce an emissions ban for new cars in the EU from 2035, Reuters reports. According to the news agency's sources, the ban could be postponed for five years.
The ban has divided the automotive sector - traditional car manufacturers such as Volkswagen and Stellantis have pushed for lighter requirements, while the electric car sector believes that the ban is needed to avoid losing the electric car market to China. Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller wants the EU to keep the ban.
- The technology, the charging infrastructure and the consumers are ready. So what are we waiting for? asks Lohscheller.
Winter weather
17.6 degrees in Norwegian Tafjord – warmer than the Canary Islands
The Norwegian weather authority has measured 17.6 degrees in Tafjord, which is located on the same latitude as Sundsvall. This is reported by Norwegian TV2, which states that it is warmer than in the Canary Islands.
Meteorologist Sigrid Auganæs says that the high temperature is due to a low pressure that has brought warm air with it.
– It is quite warm for December, she tells TV2.
Tafjord is located in a valley surrounded by mountains. When the wind comes from the south, the mountains act as a barrier that presses down the warm air, which explains why it is usually extra hot in Tafjord.
