Finland: Russia will shift forces to NATO borders if agreement is reached
Russia will redeploy its troops to NATO's eastern borders if a peace agreement is reached in Ukraine, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo tells the Financial Times.
In the face of this, Orpo's message is clear: he wants the rest of Europe to show solidarity and invest more money in the eastern flank.
- We know that when there is peace in Ukraine, Russia will still pose a threat. It is obvious that they will move their military forces closer to our border and closer to the Baltic Sea.
He also says that the countries along the eastern flank want to share more of the 130 billion euros that the EU has earmarked for military projects, and notes that Finland's economy is strained as a result of the war.
Norway plans to blow up bridges – if the Russians come
In 2017, the Bøkfjord Bridge was inaugurated, which is part of the E105 – the road connecting Norway and Russia. The bridge cost nearly 800 million kronor and was built to demonstrate good relations between the countries.
The inauguration was attended by the then Minister of Transport and representatives of both the Norwegian and Russian churches, according to The Barents Observer.
Today, the bridge could be blown up if Russia were to attack.
According to VG, changes have been made to the regulations to make it easier for the defense forces to act in the event of an attack. New Norwegian bridges are to be evaluated for possible explosive solutions, and the Norwegian Armed Forces confirmed to the newspaper that measures are already in place to destroy several newly built bridges in the country.
The rules also make it possible for the military to place explosives at bridges already during peacetime, if they are deemed important in a combat scenario.
