Trump: Israel and Hezbollah Stop Attacking Each Other
Donald Trump claims that Israel and Hezbollah have agreed not to attack each other.
“I had a very productive conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and they will not be sending any troops to Beirut,” the president writes on Truth Social.
He also writes that he has had a “very good” conversation with Hezbollah, which according to Trump has agreed to stop the fighting.
“Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel,” he writes.
In a later post, he also states that talks with Iran are continuing at full speed.
US pressure on both Israel and Lebanon for a deal
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to provide an update on the peace talks. This is stated by a US source to Reuters.
The US has presented a proposal on how the warring parties can approach each other. In the first stage, it involves Hezbollah refraining from all attacks on Israel. In exchange, the US wants Israel not to escalate the situation in Beirut.
The Lebanese president is said to have wanted to go even further, but the country's speaker is demanding that Israel stop its attacks first.
Sources: US presents plan for escalation in Lebanon
The US has presented a plan to escalate violence in Lebanon, US sources tell Al Jazeera. According to the sources, the proposal includes Hezbollah completely ceasing attacks on Israel in exchange for Israel stopping the escalation of attacks on Beirut.
The aim of the proposal is to create a basis that could eventually lead to a complete ceasefire, according to the source, who believes that responsibility for the ongoing conflict lies entirely with Hezbollah.
Israel has greatly expanded its occupation of southern Lebanon in recent weeks, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday morning that he had ordered new attacks on Beirut.
Hezbollah has also repeatedly fired at targets in northern Israel.
