Laos cave rescue

Rescuers search for new cave entrance

Rescuers in Laos have begun searching for an alternative route into the cave where two people are still believed to be trapped, the AP reports.

The two men may be in a very difficult-to-access chamber that rescue workers have not yet managed to enter.

In an update on Facebook, Thai rescue diver Kengkaj Bongkawong wrote that even if there is a second way into the cave, it will be a “very tough job” to get to the two men in the innermost chamber.

Last two victims may be trapped in hidden sixth chamber

The two people who have not yet been rescued from the cave in Laos may be in a difficult-to-find sixth cave chamber that rescue workers have not yet managed to enter, the AP reports.

– That's the only place we haven't checked, says rescue diver Mikko Paasi.

Exactly what the sixth chamber looks like, and whether it's even big enough for two people, no one on the outside knows. The passage between the fifth and sixth chambers is described as extremely narrow, and requires twisting the body to get through. It's also filled with dirty water.

Five people, who were stuck in a cave chamber further out in the system, were able to get out of the cave earlier this week.

The rescued men give tips on how to find the missing

Rescuers in Laos have not given up hope for the two men who have not yet been found after last week's heavy rain, writes the BBC. Five men who were trapped in the cave have been rescued, and it is hoped that their knowledge of the cave system will be helpful in the search for the last two.

From their hospital beds, they have been able to describe the deepest part of the cave, which is of great importance in the work of developing a new search plan.

A new search operation is to begin on Sunday.

The cave rescue in Laos — it's about the matter

  • Seven people were trapped in a cave in Xaisomboun province in Laos after heavy rains.
  • The rescue operation involved international experts, including divers from the rescue in Thailand in 2018, and lasted for over a week.
  • Five of the trapped were found alive after more than a week and were then able to send video greetings to relatives from the cave.
  • One person was rescued from the cave on Friday, May 29, and another four on Saturday.
  • Two people from another group are still believed to be missing in the cave system and the search for them continues.
