Israel must prevent any action that could lead to genocide in Gaza.

So reads the decision from the International Court of Justice in The Hague today.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague has decided to order Israel to take measures to prevent all actions falling under the second article of the Genocide Convention.

This means, among other things, that Israel must prevent the killing and harming of a specific group, in this case Palestinians in Gaza, but also prevent and punish incitement to genocide in Gaza.

"Very concerned"

This was announced by the President of the UN Court, Judge Joan E. Donoghue, on Friday.

- The court is acutely aware of the scale of the human tragedy unfolding in the region, and is deeply concerned about the continued loss of life and human suffering, she also said.

South Africa has sued Israel in the ICJ for what it says are genocidal actions in Gaza, and considers Israel's warfare – both before, but especially after, the October 7 Hamas attack – to be a violation of the international genocide convention.

Do not interrupt the offensive

The South African lawyers, in their suit, also urged the court to order Israel to immediately stop the military offensive through several interim requests. It was these claims that the court announced a decision on today.

The president of the court began by stating that the court is taking on the case, instead of dismissing it, as Israel requested.

However, Israel was not ordered to stop its military offensive in Gaza.

Israel now has one month to report back on how the measures have been taken.

The negotiations surrounding the entire case are expected to take several years.
