Political situation in Tuvalu
The Prime Minister supported Taiwan - lost the election

The island nation of Tuvalu's Taiwan-friendly Prime Minister Kausea Natano looks set to lose his seat in parliament, according to preliminary election results.

Despite the fact that Tuvalu only has 11,200 inhabitants, the election is considered to have a relatively large impact on the situation in the region, writes Reuters.

Tuvalu has previously been one of only twelve countries to recognize Taiwan, but voices within the country have advocated that it should approach China instead.

Seve Paeniu, who challenged Natano for the leadership, has previously said that one needs to "review" the relationship with Taiwan. On Friday, his message is that the relationship will be debated by the new parliament during Saturday.

Tuvalu has no formal political parties, with each of the country's eight constituencies simply electing two representatives to the country's government were.

The EU's foreign affairs chief on influence attempts: "A cancer"

The EU's foreign service has analyzed hundreds of disinformation campaigns aimed at member states and can state that China and Russia are behind the majority of them. This is reported by SR Ekot.

- Malicious content spreads like a cancer and endangers the health of our democracy, says EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borell, who is now demanding increased resources to face disinformation during the EU elections in June this year.

In its report, the Foreign Service also states, among other things, that the messaging service Telegram is the worst culprit when it comes to the spread of false and misleading information.

Border policy in the United States
Biden promises: Will close the border the day I am given the opportunity

Joe Biden urges the US Congress to vote through a bill on the border situation in the south, US media reports. The president promises to "shut down" the border on the day the law goes into effect.

He believes that the agreement to be presented in the Senate contains the "toughest and fairest" measures that can be drawn up. The proposal would give the president the authority to, as an emergency measure, close the border if it becomes congested.

Earlier on Friday, Speaker Mike Johnson wrote in a letter to Senate Republicans that the proposal in its current form is "dead on arrival", according to Reuters.

Political situation in Germany
New mass protests against AFD on Holocaust Remembrance Day

More than 100,000 people once again took to the streets across Germany on Saturday to demonstrate in support of democracy and against the far-right AFD party, German media reported.

"Kick out the Nazis" and "Voting for AFD is like 1933" were some of the posters, according to the New York Times. The significance of Holocaust Remembrance Day is extra heavy this year, the newspaper writes, with Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, an increase in anti-Semitic attacks in Germany and the far-right AFP gaining ground.

In the city of Osnabrück, Social Democrat Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned of the AFD.

- They want to return to the dark times of racial madness, discrimination, inequality and injustice, he said according to Bild.

The climate threat|Global challenges
Climate-friendly flies can replace soy as animal feed

Black soldier flies can become an alternative to soy as animal feed, reports Sky News in a report from a fly farm in central London.

The protein-rich fly larvae are raised on food waste and fed to fish, chickens and pigs. Otherwise, they mostly eat fodder based on soy, which is grown on cleared rainforest land, especially in the Amazon. Britain alone could replace half a million tonnes of soy with fly feed by 2050, reducing its climate impact significantly, according to a WWF report.

Crickets, mealworms and other insects are also raised for food, but the black soldier fly is the fastest and most efficient convert of waste to protein, according to the science magazine Anthropocene. It is already approved as feed in the USA, Canada and the EU.
