Saudi Arabia plans to allow non-Muslim diplomats to buy alcohol, reports AFP.
- The new rules allow diplomats to import a limited amount of alcohol and are there to put an end to the uncontrolled trade in alcohol, says a spokesperson for the government.
The country has been dry since 1952 when a son of the country's then King Abdulaziz, under the influence of alcohol, shot dead a British diplomat.
Recently, there have been rumors that the alcohol ban may be about to be eased in connection with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's more liberal vision for the country by the year 2030.

Task: Alcohol store opens in Saudi Arabia
A store that sells alcohol is about to open its doors in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, according to CNBC's data.
The store, located in the diplomatic quarters, would be the first of its kind since 1952 when the country imposed an absolute ban on alcohol.
The store is seen as a step in the country's plans to allow non-Muslim diplomats to buy alcohol and is in line with rumors that more liberal laws will be introduced by 2030, four years before the country is due to host the World Cup.
