Political situation in Italy
Meloni invests in Africa to prevent migration
In her election campaign, Giorgia Meloni called for a naval blockade to prevent what she called "an invasion" of migrants from Africa. Now Italy's prime minister is betting on an ambitious investment plan for the continent, writes Politico.
The plan was presented during a summit in Rome on Monday attended by 25 African leaders. Meloni initially promised 5.5 billion euros for investments in, among other things, education, infrastructure and energy supply in African countries. The stated goal is to reduce both migration and Italy's dependence on Russian gas.
- We are only at the beginning, there is a very long way ahead of us, she said during the meeting, according to Reuters.
However, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, pointed out that it would have been good if the countries had been consulted on the priorities before the plan was presented, stressing the importance of moving from words to action.
- We can no longer be content with just promises that are often not fulfilled, he says.

Canada lifts arms export ban to Turkey
The government of Canada is lifting the ban on arms exports to Turkey, it said in a statement according to Reuters.
This means that the sale of drone parts, among other things, is free. Turkey, in turn, has promised more transparency about how they are used.
Last week, sources with access to the news agency stated that the decision is connected with Ankara finally ratifying Sweden's NATO application, something that neither country commented on.

Beauty companies in the EU may pick up the bill for plastic pollution
Europe's beauty and pharmaceutical companies will have to bear the cost of cleaning up their microplastic pollution, The Guardian reports.
Under a new EU agreement, companies will be forced to cover at least 80 percent of the extra costs required to get rid of minor pollutants that pollute wastewater in European cities. The remaining cost must be borne by the governments.
- This will make our water cleaner and protect our health, says EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius.

The drone attack in Jordan
The US seeks revenge - but does not want to see war with Iran
The US will take "all necessary measures" to defend its troops after the drone attack in Jordan. This was announced by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday.
Austin has blamed the attack on "Iran-backed militants" and vowed revenge. How the United States will respond to the incident is not clear, but according to White House spokesman John Kirby, the United States does not want to see a war with Iran.
- The president is considering his options. As he has already said, we will respond,” said Kirby.
