The ANC is carrying former president Jacob Zuma ahead of the election
South Africa's ruling party ANC has decided to expel the country's former president Jacob Zuma.
The announcement was expected, writes Reuters. Since Zuma was forced from power in 2018 amid corruption allegations, the relationship with the party has been poor.
In December, the ex-president announced that in this year's election he will campaign for the new party "Nation's Spear" (MK), which shares its name with a former armed wing of the ANC during the fight against apartheid.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula doesn't like that, who has threatened to take the new party to the Electoral Tribunal for trademark infringement.
- This is a deliberate attempt to use the proud history of the armed struggle against the apartheid regime to give credibility to what is an obvious counter-revolutionary agenda, he says.

The government puts votes on the line – huge support for Zuma
The ANC's decision to port former president Jacob Zuma risks costing the ruling party many votes in the upcoming election, writes AFP.
A poll from January shows that almost one in three South Africans have confidence in Zuma, despite the corruption allegations. Support is particularly strong in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal, which is expected to play a decisive role in the election.
The relationship between the ANC and Zuma has been poor since he was forced out of the presidency in 2018 and replaced by Cyril Ramaphosa. Among other things, Zuma has called the current government "traitors and apartheid collaborators" and has announced that he will campaign for the new party "Spear of the Nation" (MK).
