The first lady's Dior bag shakes the power in South Korea
South Korea is rocked by a political scandal. The ingredients: A very expensive designer bag, a president's wife, an upcoming parliamentary election and a pastor who advocated reunification with North Korea.
The Korean-American pastor in question, Choi Jae-Young, used a hidden camera to film a meeting with First Lady Kim Keon-Hee in 2022. There, she appears to receive a gray-blue Dior bag worth over 20,000 Swedish kronor.
The film was published on YouTube by the left-wing channel Voice of Seoul in November last year, but according to several media has started to flourish again in recent days - not least because the pastor made himself known for wanting to see friendlier relations with the neighbor to the north, something President Yoon Suk- Yeol dismissed.
The concern for the president is now that the scandal will damage his right-wing party in the spring elections.

Confidence in the president plummets after the scandal
President Yoon Suk-Yeol's approval ratings are plummeting in South Korea, in the wake of the scandal in which his wife appears to have received an exclusive Dior bag from a pastor who advocates warmer relations with North Korea.
In the past week, the percentage of those who say they have low confidence in the president has gone from 58 to 63 percent, according to a Gallup Korea poll reported by Time. The opinion institute assesses that the story of the first lady is one of the reasons behind the development.
Even some of Yoon Suk-Yeol's party mates in the conservative People Power Party are now questioning the leader and expressing concern that the scandal will affect the election in April, reports NBC.
- What the first lady has done has created public anger and that anger will affect the parliamentary elections, says Bae Jong-Chan at the Insight K Institute think tank to the television channel.
