"Better a choice with flaws than no choice at all"
The challenges for Pakistan ahead of next week's elections are many. A crashed economy, climate change and religious extremism are some of them.
Several established politicians are running, including former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. One who is not participating is the popular ex-leader Imran Khan. He is imprisoned and banned from running.
Assessors believe that the current transitional government will be replaced by a weak government. Behind the scenes, the military has great influence.
Even so, Munizae Jahangir, president of the human rights organization HRCP, says a flawed election is better than no election at all.
- It is clear that we would rather have an election where everyone is allowed to stand and all parties are offered an even playing field, but at the same time, elections mean an opportunity to raise those issues, she tells AFP.

Imran Kahn and his wife are sentenced to 14 years in prison
Pakistan's ex-prime minister Imran Khan is sentenced to another 14 years in prison after yesterday's ten-year prison sentence, several media write.
The new sentence is about Kahn, together with his wife Bushra Bibi, who is also being sentenced, to have sold state gifts.
Yesterday's verdict was about the leading opposition politician allegedly leaking state secrets.
Kahn has said the allegations against him are politically motivated.
