The government of Mongolia has pledged to supply animal feed to herders in an attempt to prevent further losses of key exports such as meat and cashmere, reports AFP. So far this winter, over two million livestock have died as a result of extreme cold in the country.
About a third of the population of 3.3 million people are nomads. And many of them have found it increasingly difficult to survive as summers become drier and winters colder.
- It is becoming too difficult to be a shepherd here, says resident Tuvshinbayar Byambaa.
- All the shepherds are asking for warmer weather so that the ice will melt, so that our animals can reach the grass.

Extreme cold and snow have led to the death of over two million livestock in Mongolia so far this winter, reports AFP. Starvation and exhaustion are the main causes of death among sheep, goats, horses and cows, according to the country's Ministry of Agriculture.
