The first half of 2024 could be the warmest ever recorded globally. This is shown by a new study published in Scientific Reports and of which DN has taken notice.
According to one of the scenarios for the El Niño weather phenomenon that the researchers have developed, for example the Bay of Bengal, the Philippines and the Caribbean may experience record temperatures this spring. At the same time, the researchers warn that the extreme heat can lead to a sharp increase in, among other things, forest fires and tropical cyclones.
- I think we will see dramatic weather this summer, says Deliang Chen, professor of physical meteorology at the University of Gothenburg and one of the authors of the study.
However, El Niño's impact on Sweden is small, according to Chen.

Drought leads to a record number of forest fires in the Amazon
Brazil's president Lula da Silva has managed to halve the illegal devastation of the Amazon in a year - but he has no control over the forest fires. They were almost 3,000 last month, the highest number in February since records began in 1999 and four times as many as February last year, according to AFP.
- The climate factor clearly plays a fundamental role, says Ane Alencar at the institute for Amazonian research Ipam.
According to her, the extreme, increasing drought is due to the ever-higher temperatures. The image was confirmed by World Weather Attribution, a research project to quantify how climate change affects the probability of various weather events.
