The government's concern: "There is no time to lose"
The declining birth rates are described by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida as "the biggest crisis Japan is facing", according to the AP.
After new statistics on Tuesday showed that the figure continued to fall in 2023, government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi says the country is at a "critical stage".
- The next six years or so, until the 2030s begin and the young population begins to decline rapidly, is our last chance to reverse the trend. There is no time to lose.
The government is now planning to put forward several proposals for measures, including increased child support, according to Kyodo News.
