Debate about soldier who burned himself to death for Gaza
During the night of Tuesday, people gathered in Washington DC to show their support for Air Force employee Aaron Bushwell, who on Sunday set himself on fire in protest against what he called a genocide in Gaza, several media reports.
Bushwell died on Monday from his injuries, and the incident has sparked reactions across the country.
To Newsweek, Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders says that the incident is "obviously a terrible tragedy".
- But I think it says something about how deep desperation many people feel about the terrible humanitarian situation in Gaza, and I share that concern.
Not everyone agrees.
"People who suffer from mental illness deserve empathy and respect, but it is deeply irresponsible to celebrate them when they use a political pretext to take their own lives," writes Slate journalist Mark Joseph Stern.

New protests against new security law in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is preparing a new update to the national security law that was introduced in connection with large protests in 2019. AFP reports.
The new law, just like the previous one, has received harsh criticism. On Sunday, activists protested in the city, something that has become an increasingly rare sight.
- National security is important to the population, but it must be based on democracy, freedom and the rule of law, says activist Chan Po-Ying to Nyhetsbyrån.
The national security law introduced in 2019 has been used, among other things, to convict several democracy activists who participated in that year's protest movement.

A Russian court sentences the chairman of the Nobel Prize-winning human rights organization Memorial, Oleg Orlov, to two years and six months in prison.

According to Orlov himself, the sentence is politically motivated.
