In the state of Illinois, Donald Trump may not be on the ballot in the primary election on March 8 or in the fall presidential election, a judge in the state has ruled. As on previous occasions, the judgment refers to a section in the 14th amendment of the constitution which states that people who have supported an insurrection shall be denied standing for election.
Illinois is the third state after Colorado and Maine to make similar decisions. The Supreme Court is expected to rule and provide national guidance.
The night's decision increases the pressure on HD to give a quick answer to the question, notes the New York Times - not least because early voting in the Illinois primary election has already begun.

Partial victory for Trump when HD promises to take up heavy prosecution
The US Supreme Court agrees to take up Donald Trump's claim that, as a former president, he should be protected from prosecution in the case related to his alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. HD's taking up the issue is described in the US media as a partial victory for Trump , as the process now takes even longer.
The case is not due in court until the end of April, which means that a possible trial is being pushed closer and closer to the autumn elections. It may thus affect the election, but also Trump's opportunities to drop the entire prosecution, should he be re-elected in November.
The charges relate to the storming of the Capitol and are considered the heaviest ongoing legal proceedings against Trump.

Analysis: The clock is ticking for Biden to stop the bleeding
The primary election in Michigan is a warning signal to Joe Biden, writes Niall Stanage in an analysis in The Hill. Biden "bleeded" tens of thousands of voters who instead ticked "uncommitted" to show their dissatisfaction with the pursued Middle East policy.
A big problem for the Democrats, who are divided on the issue of Israel-Palestine, writes Stanage.
"The Michigan result made the extent of the problem crystal clear."
The protest voting is said to spread to more states, writes the New York Times in an analyzing text. It will now be important for Biden to regain momentum on the issue.
CNN's Stephen Collinson notes that Biden has eight months to fix his Michigan problem. He believes the president has a real headache, not least because whoever wins Michigan in the fall election has a good chance of returning to the White House.
In the New York Post, Michael Goodwin focuses on Trump's victory in the primaries.
"At this late stage of the Trump era, there is no mystery," Goodwin writes. He thinks that Democrats and the American media have an "arrogant refusal" to recognize what is fueling Trump's success, namely that many Americans are patriotic and do not want to embrace "globalist institutions."
