Extreme weather in Europe

Rain and cold on the way to parched Britain

After a record hot and dry summer, a change in weather awaits in Britain. Rain and significantly cooler temperatures are on the way, reports the BBC.

Temperatures are expected to drop and fall below normal for the season in the coming days.

However, the rainfall will not be enough to change the drought situation. Over 70 percent of England and all of Wales have been affected by drought. According to The Guardian, five important water reservoirs have exceptionally low levels.

In some places, the rain has been completely absent. In Wisley in Surrey, no rainfall has been recorded for 60 days.

Sweating Britons long for autumn: “It’s boiling”

Over 70 percent of England and all of Wales have been affected by drought after a record dry summer. For many Britons, the heat is starting to become stressful.

Jonathan Tutty in Birmingham tells TT that it hasn't rained properly for months and that it's "really boiling" inside the factory where he works.

- I hope autumn comes soon, says Tutty.

July was the driest July in England and Wales since records began in 1836, according to the BBC.

France promises billions in aid after the fires - the prime minister booed

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu was booed by a couple of hundred residents - more than half - in the badly burned village of Le Porge on Monday, AFP reports.

- He treats us as if we don't matter, says pensioner Tony Veiga.

Lecornu did not meet the locals, only their local officials. During a press conference, he promised up to 100 million euros, over one billion kronor, for reconstruction after the fires in the Gironde region.

In addition, building permit processes will be accelerated to a maximum of one month, and a deduction will be introduced for social security contributions for three months, according to France Info. Supervision of insurance companies will also be tightened.

50,000 hectares have burned in the area, according to Reuters. Fires are still raging in the neighboring Landes region, but they are said to be under control on Monday.
