Internet and tourism – billion-dollar investment in Greenland
Better internet, more housing and tourists are promised when the EU Commission invests billions in Greenland.
– Greenland needs the EU and the EU needs Greenland, says regional Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen at a press conference in Nuuk together with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
The EU investment of 200 million euros – 2.2 billion Swedish kronor – will, among other things, go towards expanded internet, better housing and sustainable tourism. The agreement also includes cooperation on energy and important raw materials.
At the same time, the EU's support for the island is being reiterated, in light of the frequent push by US President Donald Trump to take over the area.
- The future of Greenland is up to the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide - no one else, says von der Leyen.
