Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut is dissolving the country's parliament. This means that new elections are likely to be held in the country, reports AFP.

The next election was supposed to be held in December 2027, but the announcement means that an election could be held as early as October.

President Aleksandar Vucic has previously hinted that an election could be called after the country has been rocked by widespread anti-government protests over the past two years.

- I am proposing that the government of Serbia, in accordance with the constitution, dissolve the parliament and call new elections, Macut said in an extraordinary government meeting.
