Trump's new map: Several countries become part of the USA

The UN's new map has been accepted.

Donald Trump's looks a little different.

On it, Canada, Mexico, Greenland and Iceland go under the American flag.

Donald Trump published several map images on his platform Truth Social on Monday.

There, the country has become several countries richer, at least on paper. On one of the maps, the American flag covers large parts of North America. Canada, Mexico, Greenland and Iceland are some of the places that appear to be part of the USA.

Several Caribbean islands are also swallowed by the red-white-blue flag.

Trump has not written any explanation for the images, but the map has also been spread by the White House's official account on X.

Wants to rename the state

The map publications come after Trump set his sights on the American state of New Mexico.

On Sunday, he published a picture where “Mexico” in the state’s name had been crossed out and replaced with “America.” This was followed by several map images where the state was instead called “New America.”

The state’s Democratic governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, has dismissed the idea, pointing out that New Mexico had its name even before the United States existed.

The president has previously pushed through name changes for geographical locations. During his second term, the US government began using the name “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico. In August, Trump also ordered US federal authorities to call Lake Ontario “Lake America.”

The minister: “Completely inappropriate”

The new map was published on the same day that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was in Greenland and presented a new investment package for the island.

The EU will invest an additional 200 million euros in Greenland over the next two years. The money will go to areas such as critical minerals, energy and digital infrastructure.

At the same time, Trump has repeatedly said that the United States should gain control of Greenland. The country's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is fed up with the moves from across the Atlantic. She told the Danish news agency Ritzau:

- The Greenlandic government and the Greenlandic people have said over and over again that they do not want to be American. We can repeat that message today. I hope no one doubts that, either in the United States or in the rest of the world.

Von der Leyen made a similar point during her visit, emphasizing that the people of Greenland and Denmark, and no one else, should determine the island's future.

The only country that voted no

The fact that Iceland has also ended up under the American flag has sparked reactions. Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir summoned US Ambassador Billy Long to a meeting after the publication. There, she made it clear that Trump's statement was "completely inappropriate," according to the Icelandic Foreign Ministry.

Last week, the UN voted to phase out the classic Mercator map in favor of maps that better show the world's true proportions. 164 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while the United States was the only country to vote no.
