EU in agreement with Greenland – investing billions

Greenland and the EU have signed a cooperation agreement with a focus on energy, mining, IT and tourism, Reuters reports.

In 2026 and 2027, the EU will invest the equivalent of over two billion kronor in Greenland.

– Greenland can count on the EU. That was my message during my last visit. Today I am back to deliver concrete results from our close cooperation, says European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

She adds that Greenland's future lies in the hands of Greenland and Denmark, and that they have the EU's full solidarity. The agreement comes in light of the US's repeated threats to take over the island.

Worst harvest in 30 years for French wine farmers

French authorities report that this year's wine production looks set to be the worst in 30 years, writes Reuters. The recurring heat waves and persistent drought have meant that production in the Champagne region, for example, has halved compared to last year.

A number of other wine regions, including Burgundy-Beaujolais, are also showing a sharp decline in production.

France is the world's largest exporter of wines, but this summer other parts of French agriculture have also been affected. As a result, the national authorities announced on Friday that a crisis package equivalent to ten billion kronor will be designed to help struggling farmers.

Right-wing extremists tried to stop a boat with asylum seekers

Veterans gathered in the port of Portsmouth, UK, to stop a boat with migrants on Monday night, reports The Guardian. The protesters tried to block roads to the port and prevent the 140 asylum seekers on board from having their cases processed at the migration center. They are said to have stood in front of a bus that was leaving the port.

At 3 a.m., police had to disperse the crowd and authorities urged residents to stay away from the area.

The protest was the second in Britain in a short time. On Saturday, hundreds of far-right activists gathered at the port of Dover to prevent asylum seekers from getting off boats. Many of the activists were masked and wore balaclavas, as was also the case in Portsmouth.

New elections await in Serbia – parliament dissolved

The Serbian government has asked President Aleksandar Vucic to dissolve parliament and call new elections, Reuters reports.

This after Vucic's party, the Progressive Party of Serbia, nominated him as the new prime minister on Saturday. The goal is to strengthen his political position after two years of student-led protests.

“If we want to reduce tensions in society, there is no better way than to ask the people,” says incumbent Prime Minister Djuro Macut.

Vucic is expected to set a date for the new election in the coming days. According to the constitution, it must be preceded by a 45-60-day campaign.
