150,000 stranded after volcanic eruption in Indonesia

150,000 air travelers in Indonesia have been stranded after a series of eruptions at the Anak Krakatau volcano, reports the BBC.

A total of 712 flights at six airports have been canceled after the eruptions, which sent large amounts of ash into the atmosphere. Flights to Singapore are mainly affected, but also Doha, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur.

Many residents have reported eye problems due to the ash, and authorities are urging residents in the worst-hit areas to stay indoors.

Anak Krakatau means child of Krakatau. It was formed after the eruption of the Krakatau volcano in 1883, one of the largest and deadliest volcanic eruptions in human history.

Disappointed travelers: “What to do?”

The mood is one of resignation and despair among some of the 150,000 air travelers stranded by the volcanic eruption in Indonesia, reports the AP.

– Of course it’s annoying. The airline was supposed to give an update, but so far nothing, says Spanish Diego Urdiales, who is waiting to fly home to Madrid.

– It’s a natural disaster, force majeure, so what can we do? We just have to accept it and wait for an update, says Indonesian Michele Gouw.

At least 712 flights have been canceled, including all at Jakarta’s international airport. Several regional airports are also affected.
