Trump’s envoy arrives in Kyiv – Zelenskyj welcomes
US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in the Ukrainian capital by train, Ukrainian media report. At the station, they were welcomed by the country’s leader Volodymyr Zelenskyj.
Donald Trump’s envoys are visiting Kyiv less than a day after they were in Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin described the talks as “constructive” and “frank.” But it is very unclear whether any concrete decisions were made, such as whether peace talks between the countries should resume.
Ahead of the trip, Trump said Witkoff and Kushner were traveling east with a brand new peace deal to end the war in Ukraine.
No signs of progress after Kyiv meeting: “Looking forward to more talks”
US negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff’s meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyj in Kyiv has ended, writes AFP. There are no indications of concrete progress from there either.
In brief statements, the Americans describe the talks as “meaningful” and add that they look forward to holding more. No further details are given.
The same tone was used after the Americans’ meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow yesterday. Both sides described the talks in positive terms, but gave no indication that a peace agreement had come any closer.
Zelensky: War will continue this winter
Ukraine's meeting with US negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff was "very substantive", says President Zelenskyj according to Reuters.
They discussed security and economic guarantees for Ukraine, anti-aircraft missiles and a support package for the winter, he continues.
The talks do not appear to have led to any breakthroughs - Zelenskyj adds that he expects the war to continue this winter.
It is not clear whether the US has promised to send more military support, such as Patriot missiles, which Ukraine desperately needs more of to protect itself against Russian ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv.
Zelenskyj says he hopes for new trilateral talks with the US and Russia.
