von der Leyen visits Greenland – shows EU support

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is visiting Greenland together with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Euronews reports.

She is there to show the EU's support after the threats from the US, and will, among other things, sign a joint declaration with the Greenland government.

In her speech in Davos earlier this year, von der Leyen promised a "massive increase in European investment" in Greenland to strengthen security in the Arctic.

The EU Commission has proposed the equivalent of almost six billion kronor in Greenland investments in the budget for 2028 to 2034. According to the Financial Times, von der Leyen is expected to present a further two billion in support during the visit.

Lavrov: Germany is effectively declaring war on us

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is warning the West of “the beginning of a real war,” Russian state media reports according to Sky News.

He is referring to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s statement that Russia was behind the explosive drone found on a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig airport.

– All these statements from Merz about making Germany Europe’s leading military power again are now being put into practice. He is effectively declaring war on us, says Lavrov.

Former US minister: The war is likely to last another six months

The US risks a new perpetual war in the Middle East. This is what veteran Democrat Leon Panetta, who was, among other things, Secretary of Defense and CIA Director under Barack Obama, told The Guardian.

He believes that the war, which has been going on for six months, will continue for at least as long.

– It is no secret that the US and Iran are stuck in a terrible stalemate, with very few options to end the war, he says.

The high personnel turnover in the Pentagon – most recently the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll – sends signals of weakness to US geopolitical adversaries such as China, Russia, Iran and North Korea, according to Panetta.

Eight European countries experienced their hottest day ever

This year's European summer was exceptionally hot in many countries. 33 had its hottest July ever, with persistent heat waves.

Eight countries also experienced their hottest days ever since measurements began, according to statistics from the EU weather institute Copernicus.

In Denmark, the heat record was broken on June 27, writes Danmarks Radio. Then 37 degrees were measured in Danish East Jutland and on Funen. It has never been so hot before.

Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria also broke heat records this summer.
