The US and Russia are said to have had constructive talks about a possible end to the war in Ukraine - although Vladimir Putin is talking about the same goals as before.
Donald Trump's envoy has left Moscow and is in Kiev. The visit there is their first during the war.
Few details have been made public about what was discussed during Saturday's meeting in Moscow between President Vladimir Putin and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov, the talks were "extremely frank".
- They put forward a number of ideas about possible paths to an agreement, he said after the meeting.
According to Ushakov, Putin highlighted Russia’s “success” on the battlefield and the unchanged objectives of the war, the Russian state news agency Tass reports. Putin stressed, as he has done since the beginning of the war, that the “root causes of the conflict” must be resolved.
From Moscow to Kyiv
Witkoff and Kushner left Moscow by plane and arrived in Kiev by train early Sunday afternoon. It is their first official visit to the Ukrainian capital during wartime.
There they will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ahead of the Americans’ arrival, he announced on social media that they are fully preparing on the Ukrainian side for meaningful talks.
“Ukraine is and will always be constructive,” Zelensky writes.
“We need peace. We need security guarantees. We need a decent peace period after the war. Our proposals are ready.”
Russia currently controls almost a fifth of Ukraine’s territory and claims several regions in eastern Ukraine.
From the American side, the White House announces that “concrete plans for the next steps” have been discussed with the Kremlin, and that these will be made public in the coming weeks.
Deadly Russian attacks
At least eight people have been killed and nearly 70 injured in Russian attacks on Ukraine in the past 24 hours, Ukrainian authorities say, writes The Kyiv Independent. Several of the deaths have been recorded in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions, which have been heavily shelled.
According to Ukraine’s air defenses, over 100 drones and at least six missiles were fired at the country.
On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a three-day halt to all attacks on the capital Kiev, due to the Americans’ visit there.
