EXCLUSIVE—An update on King Vajiralongkorn's life in Europe, where he spends most of his time, only returning to Thailand for essential ceremonies. 1/13

Vajiralongkorn is now spending most of his time in the German resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, an hour's drive southwest of Munich, in the foothills of the Alps. 2/13

He is renting the entire luxury 95-room Hotel Sonnenbichl for himself and his entourage. The hotel website says it is not taking any bookings but doesn't say why. The reason is that Vajiralongkorn has booked the entire hotel indefinitely. 3/13

The hotel is where Vajiralongkorn spends time with several mistresses, including leading concubine Sineenat “Goy” Wongvajirapakdi. It's not far from the Zugspitze mountain where Vajiralongkorn was photographed in a crop top with Goy in April. 4/13

Vajiralongkorn's wife, Queen Suthida "Nui" Tidjai, is not living with Vajiralongkorn. She is based at Hotel Waldegg in the Swiss town of Engelberg, about 80 minutes drive south of Zurich. 5/13

The king visits her in Switzerland occasionally (and has just returned from a visit in which he was filmed cycling with her in a crop top). This why there have been so many flights between Munich and Zurich by Vajiralongkorn's three 737 planes. 6/13

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, also known as Rama X (right) and his wife, Queen Suthida are getting on a bike.

But the royal couple spend most of their time apart, with Vajiralongkorn enjoying himself in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with his mistresses. 7/13

The king's son with his former wife Srirasmi Suwadee, Prince Dipangkorn, lives in a large villa bought by Vajiralongkorn in the town of Feldafing outside Munich and attends a special school nearby. He is believed to have autism or a similar condition. 8/13

Vajiralongkorn does not see Dipangkorn often. Srirasmi — who is living in house arrest in Rachaburi — is hardly ever allowed to see him. Another villa bought by Vajiralongkorn in Tutzing near Munich for 12 million euros is no longer used by the king and is mostly empty. 9/13

Large numbers of the king's staff and entourage are based at the Hilton Munich Airport Hotel, where for several years the palace has rented the entire fourth floor of one of the hotel's two wings. 10/13

The expense of all of this is, of course, enormous. Permanent bookings at three luxury hotels — in Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Engelberg — plus the upkeep of the vast royal staff and entourage, plus the cost of frequent flights by the king's 737s. 11/13

Much of this cost is paid by Thai taxpayers, even though Vajiralongkorn is the richest monarch in the world with a fortune of more than $50 billion. 12/13

Many Thais are deeply resentful that their monarch is wasting their tax money to finance a semi-permanent holiday in Europe, but because of Thailand's draconian lese majeste and computer crimes laws, and widespread fear of Vajiralongkorn, there is no public criticism. 13/13
