Now the spread of the coronavirus in Europe is increasing again.
Especially in the UK, where Scotland is at record highs.
Experts point to abolished restrictions - and a new, more contagious variant.
According to the UK's equivalent to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 9% of Scotland's population carried the virus last week. This is the highest figure measured since ONS began conducting random surveys of the covid situation there in October 2020.

- from the middle days, when about one in 15 had covid. "In England, infections have increased across all regions and age groups, especially for those over 50, who have the highest levels of infection since our investigations began," Sarah Crofts, who leads ONS covid studies, told The Guardian.

According to the British newspaper, experts attribute the increase to a number of different factors. The UK's restrictions have been almost completely removed, the British's behavior has become less cautious and the new BA2 variant is said to be 30% more contagious than the previous type of omicron.
In Germany, the infection has also increased since the beginning of March. According to the Robert Koch Institute's figures, 318,387 new cases and 300 new deaths were confirmed with covid-19 on Wednesday, Svenska Dagbladet writes.

That probably has to do with the fact that many countries eased their restrictions during January and February and then we know that the conditions for the spread of infection increase, says Niklas Arnberg, professor of virology, to SvD.
On Tuesday, Hans Kluge, head of the European Region at the World Health Organization (WHO), criticized that many countries have now lifted their restrictions "brutally - from too much to too little", writes The Guardian.
According to Kluge, the infection is increasing in 18 of the region's 53 countries. In seven days, 5.1 million new cases and 12,496 covid-19 deaths had been reported.

Enligt Storbritanniens motsvarighet till Statistiska centralbyrån, Office for national statistics (ONS), bar 9% av Skottlands befolkning på viruset i förra veckan. Det är den högsta siffra som uppmätts sedan ONS började göra stickprovsundersökningar av covidläget där i oktober 2020.
Även Englands siffror har passerat landets högsta notering någonsin – från mellandagarna, när omkring en av 15 hade covid.
– I England har infektionerna ökat över alla regioner och åldersgrupper, framförallt för de över 50, som har de högsta smittonivåerna sedan våra undersökningar började, säger Sarah Crofts som leder ONS covidstudier, till The Guardian.
Enligt den brittiska tidningen härleder experter ökningen till en rad olika faktorer. Storbritanniens restriktioner nästan helt tagits bort, britternas beteende har blivit mindre försiktigt och den nya BA2-varianten sägs vara 30% mer smittsam än den tidigare sortens omikron.
I Tyskland har smittan också ökat sedan i början av mars. Enligt Robert Koch-institutets siffror bekräftades 318 387 nya fall och 300 nya dödsfall med covid-19 under onsdagen, skriver Svenska Dagbladet.
– Det där har förmodligen att göra med att många länder lättade sina restriktioner under januari och februari och då vet vi att förutsättningarna för smittspridning ökar, säger Niklas Arnberg, professor i virologi, till SvD.
På tisdagen kritiserade Hans Kluge, chef för Europaregionen på Världshälsoorganisationen (WHO) att många länder nu hävt sina restriktioner ”brutalt – från för mycket till för lite”, skriver The Guardian.
Enligt Kluge ökar smittan i 18 av regionens 53 länder. På sju dagar hade 5,1 miljoner nya fall och 12 496 dödsfall med covid-19 rapporterats.
– De länder där vi ser en specifik ökning är Storbritannien, Irland, Grekland, Cypern, Frankrike, Italien och Tyskland, sa Kluge.
