18 people have died and up to 60 have been injured after the Russian attack on the shopping center in Ukraine.

But Russia denies attacking civilians.

Instead, they claim that the mall began to burn after an attack on a warehouse with EU weapons.

Now the Russian Ministry of Defense announces that the goal in Krementjuk was to hit hangars filled with American and European weapons, writes the state news agency Ria.

The explosion of the ammunition must then have caused a violent fire in the adjacent shopping center, according to the Ministry of Defense.

"On June 27 in the city of Krementjuk, Russian air forces fired missiles at hangars with weapons and ammunition supplied by the United States and other European countries," Russia said in a statement.

"The detonation of the Western stored ammunition caused a fire in an inoperable shopping center located near the facility."

Large number of dead and injured

It was on Monday that a shopping mall in the Ukrainian city of Krementjuk was attacked by a Russian robot.

18 people have died and 59 people have been injured, according to Ukrainian authorities.

36 people are missing, according to Reuters.

The number has not yet been confirmed.

According to President Volodomyr Zelensky, more than a thousand civilians have hidden in the mall.

- The shopping center is on fire, firefighters are trying to put out the fire, the number of victims is impossible to imagine, says Zelenskyj on Monday night.

He also stressed that the mall "did not pose a threat to the Russian army" and had no "strategic value".

Videos show how the mall burned intensely with large flames after the attack and the devastation is extensive.

Russia denies

Russia, which has a history of attacking civilian targets such as hospitals, theaters and train stations in Ukraine, also denies guilt through Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.

On Twitter, he claims that the incident is a "Ukrainian provocation".

The attack is condemned by both the United States and other G7 countries.

Russia's attack on civilians in a shopping mall is cruel. We know the Ukrainian people. As shown at the G7 summit, the United States, together with our allies and partners, will continue to hold Russia accountable for such atrocities, "US President Joe Biden wrote on Twitter.

The united G7 leaders in a statement call the attack "disgusting":

"Indiscriminate attacks on innocent civilians are a war crime," wrote the leaders of the great powers.

The attack is condemned by the UN

On Monday evening, Ukraine appealed for a crisis meeting at the UN. As a result, the agency convened an extraordinary meeting of the New York Security Council.

- The Russian attack is one of the most shameless terrorist acts in European history, Volodymyr Zelenskyj also said in his evening speech on Monday.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric says that "an attack on a shopping center is deplorable, regardless of the number (deaths)".
