is evident that the palace has not realised its deteriorating position
of power. Why did they organise an event like this? This is the Royal
Concert to celebrate the 70th anniversary of King Vajiralongkorn. The
concert showcased the self-composed songs of Princess Sirivannavari--an
attempt to resuscitate obsolete propaganda. There was another
attempt--reinventing the princess to be "as genius as" her grandfather,
King Bhumibol. She has been extolled as an able jockey, badminton player
(on national team), designer, "supermodel", painter, and now music
composer and conductor of orchestra. Everybody knows that she is an
average girl and those songs were composed by someone else. But what's
more important is that this event was organised amid the economic crisis
in Thailand, and amid growing call for royal reforms. But this call has
continued to fall on deft ears.
