Close Trump associate sentenced for contempt of Congress
Donald Trump's former adviser Peter Navarro is convicted of contempt of Congress - the equivalent of contempt of court - after ignoring a subpoena from the committee investigating the storming of the Capitol in 2021. US media reports.
Navarro has refused to testify or hand over documents to the committee, writes Reuters. Before the trial, Navarro said Trump had classified the information, but according to the ruling, he has not presented any evidence to support that. His lawyer also argued that it may have been a mistake, according to NBC.
The punishment can be between one month and one year in prison. It is the second time a close associate of Trump has been convicted of contempt of Congress. Steve Bannon was sentenced last year to four months in prison. He has appealed the sentence.
Teachers and students strike against French abaya ban
The Maurice Utrillo High School in Paris has gone on strike against the government's decision to ban the abaya and quamis in public schools, French media reports.
"We distance ourselves from the government's Islamophobic policy," reads a statement from the school's protest group, according to Le Figaro.
Some parents joined the demonstration outside the school.
- We don't expect a minister to tell us how to dress. We expect him to give us tools for our children to have a good future, Angèle Dione told BFMTV.
On the first day of school of the autumn term on Monday, girls wearing abayas were sent home from several schools, according to Al Jazeera. The ban on the garments is justified by the fact that they are considered to violate French laws on secular education. Veils, Jewish skullcaps and large crosses are already prohibited.

Continued storm complicates evacuation in Greece
Despite
the complicated situation, 885 people have been able to be saved from
the floods in Greece, states climate crisis minister Vassilis Kikilias
according to AP.
Several
people spent the night of Thursday and most of the day on their roofs
without food or water before being rescued in Thessaly, where the
situation is at its worst. Helicopters could not fly out earlier because of the storms, and rescue boats could not reach because of the strong currents.
During 24 hours, as much rain fell as normally falls during an entire year, according to AFP. Roads and bridges have been washed away and cars rushed with the water into the sea.
Six people have died in the floods, six are missing and many are still isolated. In Turkey and Bulgaria, another 12 people have died since the storm began on Tuesday.
