Russia hails G20: "A step in the right direction"

Russia praises the joint statement of the G20 countries, which neither mentions Russia by name nor condemns the aggression in Ukraine, the BBC reports.

The Kremlin had not expected consensus around a statement and the wording is "a step in the right direction", says Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

- We were ready to defend our own wording of the text. The global south cannot be lectured anymore.

Ukraine, which was invited to last year's G20 meeting in Indonesia but not to this year's in India, has previously said the statement was "not something to be proud of".

Biden during the G20: The United States does not want to hold back China US

President Joe Biden met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang during the G20 meeting in New Delhi before heading on to Vietnam on Sunday, reports Bloomberg.

During a press conference in Hanoi, Biden said he has no interest in "holding back China."

- I just want to ensure that we have a relationship that is characterized by clarity and consensus, where everyone knows what applies, he added. A conversation at such a high political level has not been held between China and the United States in months. Biden noted that Chinese growth has slowed, but added that he does not believe that will make the country more inclined to invade Taiwan.
