The UN chief "deeply saddened" by the siege in Gaza
UN Secretary-General António Guterres calls on Israel to consider Gazan civilians and allow supplies through. He says so in a statement on Monday.
-
While recognizing Israel's legitimate security measures, I remind
Israel that military operations must be carried out strictly in
accordance with international humanitarian law, he says according to
AFP.
In the same way, he says he recognizes the suffering of the Palestinian people, "but nothing can justify these acts of terror".
Guterres
believes that the "extremely difficult" humanitarian situation in Gaza
will worsen exponentially with Israel's total siege and blockade that
began on Monday. He said the UN continues to try to get aid to those in need in Gaza.

A whole cast of siblings among the dead in the bombing of Gaza
At least 91 Palestinian children have been killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza since Saturday. This is reported by Al Jazeera with reference to a Palestinian children's rights organization, which in turn quotes the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The entire Nazir Shawqui Shaban family was reportedly killed in a bombing of the Al-Nasr residential area in northern Gaza early Sunday morning: Omar, eleven, Ghada, ten, Batoul, seven, Ahmad, one, and both children's parents.
The organization has documented several cases where entire families have been killed when their homes have been bombed. Filmmaker Ruwaida Amer writes in a column in Al Jazeera about how families lock themselves in the same room "so that they can survive together or die together".
