Putin gives Duma ten days: Remove nuclear weapons ban
The Russian parliament, the Duma, is tasked by Vladimir Putin with investigating how the country is to withdraw from the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), Reuters reports. The deadline is ten days from Monday.
According to Putin, Russia should reconsider the possibility of withdrawing its ratification of the agreement to fall in line with the United States, which along with eight other countries have signed but not ratified it.
Russia possesses the world's largest nuclear arsenal and a test could provoke other countries such as the United States and China to follow suit, according to Reuters. The Test Ban Treaty is a multilateral agreement that prohibits all nuclear weapons tests.
