Underrating for Scholz in German local elections - AfD is on the rise
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his centre-left coalition suffered heavy losses in Sunday's local elections in the federal states of Bavaria and Hesse, writes AFP.
All three parties in the coalition – Scholz's social democratic SDP, the Greens and the liberal FDP – lost votes in both elections, according to polling station polls.
The Christian Democratic CDU in Hesse, and the sister party CSU in Bavaria, were clearly the largest with 35 and 37 percent respectively.
The far-right AfD advanced in both elections. In Bavaria, they are tied with the SDP in second place with 16 percent, and in Hesse they get 15 percent - one percent less than the Greens, who thus became second largest.
In Hesse, the situation is considerably more gloomy for Scholz's coalition - the SDP got 8.5 percent, and the FDP ended up below the five percent threshold.
The two local elections are seen as an indicator of how the political winds are blowing in the country, according to DW.

The army captures a rebel stronghold - with the support of Wagner
Mali's army has captured the town of Anefis, which until now was controlled by rebel forces. Sources in both camps told AFP.
According to rebel groups, the government forces brought with them fighters from the Wagner group. That is also what eyewitnesses in the city whom AFP spoke to say.
Anefis is strategically located on the road between the government-controlled capital, Gao, and the rebel forces' most important stronghold, Kidal.
- But Anefis is not that important to us. We are at war, and the war will be long and not about a single position," a rebel spokesman told AFP.
