Analysis: Trump wants to be the kingmaker in the presidential battle
Donald Trump threw himself into the mess after Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted to characteristically make himself kingmaker within the Republicans. Stephen Collinson writes for CNN.
The most dramatic thing is not that Trump himself toyed with the idea of standing, but that he has now expressed support for "one of his most loyal attack dogs" Jim Jordan, Collinson continues.
"But Jordan's candidacy - and Trump's support - seems to scare more moderate Republicans [...] who fear that voters in their constituencies will feel alienated by Trump as the top name in 2024."
Some of Trump's staunchest supporters in Congress, such as Troy Nehls and Marjorie Taylor Greene, immediately launched their campaign to make him speaker. That's what Ryan Lizza and Rachael Bade write for Politico.
They haven't given up yet — Nehls is said to have been probing legal options for Trump to become speaker despite the indictments, and was trying to persuade the president as recently as Thursday night, the writers continue
"He still believes Trump can become speaker if a deadlock occurs."

Trump is not running - is backing Jordan
Donald Trump is backing Republican congressman Jim Jordan as the new speaker of the US House of Representatives. This is what the former president writes in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, according to Reuters.
"He will make a great speaker and has my full support," Trump writes.
According to previous information to US media, Trump has considered visiting the US Congress next week to propose himself as a candidate for the post.
But since support for Trump is divided within the Republicans, it would be difficult for him to win, writes Politico. To be elected, almost all Republican members would have to vote for him.
